Karl is a Senior Associate in the Employment Relations and Safety team who specialises in work health and safety (WHS) matters. He advises clients across a range of industries, including construction, mining, oil and gas, education, food and agriculture, communications and the public sector, on WHS risk and compliance matters.  

Karl supports clients on a broad range of WHS matters, including critical incident response, regulatory investigations and compliance strategies. He is regularly involved in defending prosecutions brought by regulators and provides practical front end advice on managing workplace risks. He also delivers training and briefings to middle and senior managers in high-risk industries.

Before commencing his legal career, Karl worked as a WHS Manager on major public infrastructure projects in Brisbane. Drawing on this experience, he provides pragmatic and commercially focused advice that reflects the practical challenges that complex organisations with diverse operations face.

Acting for one of Australia’s largest spatial data companies in the successful trial defence of a prosecution associated with a fatal incident on a remote construction project.

Undertaking a comprehensive legal review of an international energy company’s Safety Management System.

Major construction project fatality

Acting for the Principal of one Queensland’s largest ever private developments following the fatality of a member of the public during construction, resulting in the regulatory investigation being discontinued against the Principal.

Advising a large international mining company on WHS considerations associated with the potential acquisition of significant coal assets in Queensland.

Coal mine operator and site senior executive

Acting for a large Australian coal mining company and a Site Senior Executive following a fatal incident at an underground coal mine in Queensland which resulted in the prosecution against the Site Senior Executive being withdrawn.

Undertaking a WHS legal audit and physical inspection of over 60 sites across Queensland on behalf of an emergency service.
